Celebrate Japanese art, food, and culture at Teppankai in South Yarra

This August, Teppankai’s stylish, temple-like interior is the perfect setting for a celebration of Japanese art, culture, and food.

The evening starts at 5:30pm, when guests are invited to ponder the striking, poetic artwork of Junko Azukawa ( Junko’s lifelong study of traditional calligraphy and Sumie ink painting has contributed to her evolving a highly contemporary style that also shares with her audience the deep meaning and culture of traditional artforms.

Acclaimed shamisen performer Noriko Tadano ( will also entertain the crowd with a compelling performance on this ancient Japanese instrument. Noriko’s unique style has won her many local accolades, including the 2012 Grand Final of Australia’s Got Talent, alongside her musical partner George Kamikawa.

Finally, Junko will hold a public demonstration of her calligraphy at the centre of Teppankai. Junko’s calligraphic work has been exhibited widely throughout Australia and Japan, and she is also sought after by commercial designers for her skillful brushwork on label and interior design.

Throughout the evening, Teppankai will showcase Japan’s outstanding cuisine with a series of set menus. Guests can enjoy a range of exquisite dishes, including Teppankai’s signature Kaisen teppanyaki with seasonal vegetables, and black sesame crème brulee to finish (see for further details).

Time: 5:30pm-late

Program: 5:30-7:30pm exhibition by Junko Azukawa; 7:30-8pm Shamisen performance by Noriko Tadano; 8-8:30pm calligraphy demonstration by Junko Azukawa; set menu served throughout.

Price: Starts at $40pp for ala carte or $60pp for teppanyaki, two menu options
