Royal Saxon

We’ve heard a little buzz about the Royal Saxon for quite some time now and when we drove past their place on a Friday night, there was a cue forming all the way from around the corner of the building and at that moment we just had to see what all this buzz was about! When we saw their fresh and seasonal menu, it seemed only appropriate to taste and experience all the best that Royal Saxon has to offer.

We started off with some of their famous cocktails: The Montysour and Rhubramble. They were very crisp, refreshing, sweet and strong – just the way we like it! Throughout the evening we indulged in each course with matching wine pairings from all over the world and let me tell you, they are true connoisseurs as the pairings were on point! Highlights of the evening included, calamari with tomato confit, broad beans, potatoes and olives which was paired with Clarence House, Pinot Blanc – 2012 Tasmania. Snapper ‘al cartoccio’ with silver beet, white wine and Sicilian anchovies, matched with Prancing Horse Chardonnay, 2009 Mornington Peninsula Australia.

This winner of the evening was definitely the house-made fresh Strozzapreti pasta with Crystal Bay prawns, Sea Bounty mussels, Tasmanian scallops, fresh chilli and basil. Wow. This dish was so rich, flavorful, delicate and matched perfectly with Joseph Faiveley, Bourgogne Rouge, Pinot Noir – 2012 Burgendy France. We finished our savory selection with the broccolini and carrot with toasted cashews, seeded mustard and white balsamic dressing which was rich, creamy yet very warm and fresh.

Naturally, we concluded the evening on one of the sweetest notes and had the most delicious pear tart accompanied with home made ice cream. This was accompanied with Keller Gruner Silvaner Reinhessen – 2013 Germany and let me tell you, this was definitely one of the best homemade desserts we’ve had in a long time …and trust me we LOVE desserts.

Overall, we had a very flavourful, rich and ambient dining experience at Royal Saxon and now we could really taste and see what this wait was all about!
